Terna
Terna is a major grid operator for electricity transmission and the principal owner of the high voltage National Transmission Grid with over 98% of the national electricity infrastructures, for a total of approximately 40 thousand kilometers of grid.
The company, headed by Luigi Roth, Chairman, and Flavio Cattaneo, CEO, is responsible for transmitting and dispatching electricity throughout the entire territory and safely managing, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, the balance between demand and supply of electricity in Italy.
Terna has been listed in the Italian Stock Exchange since 2004. Its major shareholder is presently Cassa Depositi e Prestiti with 29.9% of the shares. 64% of Terna’s capital is Italian, 36% is owned by foreign funds. Since its listing, Terna’s shares have earned nearly 64% with total shareholder returns of approximately 106%, being confirmed as among the most remunerative shares on the market.
Abroad, Terna’s subsidiary is Terna Participações, which is listed in the San Paolo Stock Exchange in Brazil, and operates in electricity transmission. The company is the second private operator in the sector in Brazil, on the basis of revenues.
Since 2004 to the present, the company has continued to invest in expanding and improving the grid and in building infrastructures. This commitment will continue also in the next years: the company’s 2008-2012 strategic plan includes investments for a total of 3.1 billion euros, 80% of which for developing the national grid.
Environmental awareness underlies all of Terna’s business choices and the important process of developing electricity infrastructures. For its commitment in this field, Terna was included in the Ftse4Good, the prestigious stock market index of the Financial Times Stock Exchange in London that groups the best European companies that have stood out for sustainable development and in the Ethical Index Euro, the index that groups the Socially Responsible European companies with the greatest capitalization.
Furthermore, Terna now has an integrated management system for quality, the environment, occupational safety and health protection. Of the 40 companies of the S&P MIB, Terna is among the 5 companies that received the ISO9001 quality certification, the ISO14001 environmental certification and the OHSAS18001 occupational safety certification.
