Must I be an established artist to participate?

n order to participate in the Terna 01 Award one must not be an established artist. All emerging artists will be registered in the GIGAWATT or MEGAWATT category according to their age (under or over 35). A third category, TERAWATT, will be reserved to senior artists who have already exhibited their works in important museums.

How do I register?

It is possible to register in two ways:
1.directly registering in this website in the section “Participation”
2.registering by mail or courier, send the Registration Form filled out in all its sections, your CV accompanied by your photograph and a cd with the images (jpg or tiff format at 3000dpi, RGB color method, maximum 1000x1000 pixels, 5 MegaByte) of the participating artwork to: Premio Terna 01, c/o, xister, Vicolo della Frusta 8/9, 00153 Roma
The deadline for submitting the documents necessary for registration in both cases is October 30, 2008.

What are the awards?

For each one of the three categories TERAWATT, GIGAWATT and MEGAWATT and for the ONLINE AWARD, there will be one winner. The prizes will be divided as follows:
TERAWATT Category: 100,000.00 euros award (entirely devolved to a social initiative in the cultural and artistic field).
GIGAWATT Category: award of 10,000.00 euros to purchase the artwork.
MEGAWATT Category: award of 10,000.00 euros to purchase the artwork.
ONLINE: award of 5,000.00 euros to purchase the artwork.
In addition to the four winners of the first prizes, the Jury will also select other 12 artworks from the GIGAWATT and MEGAWATT categories each one having the right to an award of 2,000 euros to purchase the artworks. Each one of the authors of the 12 selected works may either accept or refuse the award. In the event of a refusal, another artist will be contacted until the twelve finalists for the awards are reached.

Who is the Jury formed by?

The competition includes a Committee of Honor and a technical Jury. The Jury is formed by important representatives from the Italian and international artistic, cultural and entrepreneurial worlds and is chaired by a Board formed by Terna’s CEO Flavio Cattaneo, by Terna’s Chairman, Luigi Roth and by the curators, Gianluca Marziani and Francesco Cascino.

Who is Terna?

erna is the principal owner of the high voltage National Electricity Transmission Grid. It owns 40 thousand kilometers of electricity lines and is responsible for safely managing, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, the balance between electricity demand and supply throughout the national territory. What types of art works can participate?

The artist can present a new artwork or one that was created not more than 12 months prior to the date of the competition’s opening, that has never participated in other awards or competitions and that addresses the theme TRANSMITTING ENERGY: A CONTEMPORARY METAPHOR. The size of the artwork can vary and reach a maximum of 3 meters x 3 meters.

The works can be created with the following techniques: PAINTING: with any technique and with any type of support, such as oils, acrylic, ink, vinyl, water colors, graphite, pencil, industrial paints, canvas, paper, wood, plastic, iron.
PHOTOGRAPHS, ELABORATIONS and LIGHT-BOX: traditional and digital photography and light-box. A mix of painting and mechanical and digital techniques are also allowed, from photography to the many different digital manipulations. Stills from videos are also accepted, Polaroids, photographs from cellular phones and all works that are bi-dimensional.

Every artist must indicate the title of the Artwork and provide a brief statement explaining the connection between the project presented and the award’s theme.

Who is the curator of the Award?

The Award was created based on Terna’s idea. The curator is Gianluca Marziani and the General Secretary is Francesco Cascino.

Can I participate even if I am not Italian?

Foreign artists can also participate, on the condition that they work steadily in Italy (i.e. reference gallery, art studio, etc.)

What criteria will be used for selecting the winning artworks?

Quality, research, innovation and contemporary aspects will be the fundamental selection criteria.
On the basis of these criteria, the Limited Evaluation Committee will examine all the artworks and will select the artists that will enter the final phase: 50 for the MEGAWATT category and 50 for the GIGAWATT category and 30 for the TERAWATT category. The Jury will then select the 3 winners of the TERAWATT, GIGAWATT and MEGAWATT categories and the other 12 winning works of the GIGAWATT and MEGAWATT categories that will receive the awards.
For the ONLINE AWARD the winner will be the artwork that received the highest number of online votes. The artist will receive an award and the artwork will be displayed at the final exhibit and included in the Catalogue.
The selection of the art works participating in the competition will result in 16 artists being awarded. In particular, 1 first prize for each of the 3 categories: TERAWATT, GIGAWATT and MEGAWATT, 12 additional awards for the GIGAWATT and MEGAWATT categories and 1 ONLINE Award.

Will there be a closing ceremony?

An exhibit of the winning artworks will be held and an awards ceremony. Both will be held in December 2008 at a museum or suitable venue in Rome.

Will the artworks be returned to the artists?

The winning artworks will become the property of Terna and will therefore not be returned to the artists. The artworks that will not receive awards will remain the property of the respective artists.

Will there be an exhibit and/or show/sale for all the participating artworks?

The Terna 01 Award includes the organization of one ore more exhibition events, of a color catalogue and the final assigning of money awards for a total of € 150,000.00 The exhibit of the winning artworks and the awards ceremony will be held at the end of November 2008 at a museum or at an accredited venue in Rome.

Is the registration in this award exclusive, or can one also participate in other awards both in Italy and in other countries at the same time?

The artwork proposed must not have participated in other awards or competitions. The artists, however, may participate in other awards or competitions at the same time, presenting different artworks.

Is the theme of energy transmission mandatory?

Yes, the artwork must be linked to the theme “TRANSMITTING ENERGY: A CONTEMPORARY METAPHOR”.
The artists is required to interpret this theme in a broad and personal way: based on the hypothesis of the most obvious ones to the most subjective interpretations, on metaphors and allegories, referring to poetic or literary subjects, to evoking fantastic and surreal moments, to exploring the myriad possibilities that the various genres of artistic expression offer. The artist, in his role as a privileged interpreter of the contemporary world, is called to develop the award’s theme, exploring the connection between energy transmission and art, so as to create original and innovative connections. Art runs along the high voltage lines acting as the system’s developing engine through visual and conceptual expression with the entrepreneurial world so that the project transmits the proper energy to Visual Thinking and to the country’s culture.

Will there be a final catalogue for all the art works?

A final catalogue will be published to include all the artworks that will participate in the award’s final phase. The catalogue will be presented and be available during the awards ceremony. It will subsequently be distributed by the editor in select book stores.

Can a group of artists participate with a joint work?

There are no limitations, provided the artwork addresses the award’s theme and the artists of the group meet the requirements. (For the age, the youngest artist will be considered).

Is the Award an annual event?

The Terna 01 Award is at its first edition and will end on October 30, 2008. The final event, with the selection of the finalists, the presentation of the catalogue and the awards ceremony, is scheduled to take place within December 2008, provided unforeseen circumstances beyond one’s control arise. The dates and modalities of the next editions of the Award to be organized will be announced online at www.premioterna.it.

How does not vote online?

Through this website in the dedicated section. All the participating art works in the Terna 01 Award, regardless of the Category, will participate in the ONLINE Award. The website visitors can vote between 8 am of November 3, 2008 to 6 pm of November 20, 2008 expressing only one preference. Voting will be anonymous. The art work that receives the highest number of votes will win.

Is it an international award?

The Terna 01 Award is promoted and takes place across the national territory. Participation is also open to foreign artists that steadily work in Italy.
