Luigi Ontani, the image-artist of the 2009 Contemporary Day

Luigi Ontani will be the artist promoting the 2009 Contemporary Day scheduled for next October 3. The artist who is the winner of the Terna Prize 01 in the "Terawatt" category with the artwork "Electricthrone" is also a jury member of the new edition of the Terna Prize 02; he will also create the guiding image of the event promoted by AMACI, the Association of the Italian Contemporary Art Museums.

Luigi Ontani, the versatile artist that for over thirty years has been exhibiting his body as an artwork through the use of tableaux-vivant, or photographic self-portraits in the guise of historical figures or works of art, has just returned from New York following the success obtained at the "Connectivity" exhibit at the Chelsea Museum. He is now preparing to make his mark on the fifth edition of the Contemporary Day that in its previous four editions has grown from 180 to 800 participants. Nearly one thousand cultural institutes will be involved in the event which for the entire day, together with the museums associated with AMACI, will allow visitors to enter the museums for free. An open house to present artists and new ideas through exhibits, laboratories, events and conferences, a rich program that will offer the wide public an opportunity to closely experience the world of contemporary art.

Also this year, the General Directorate for Quality and Protection of the Landscape, Architecture and Contemporary Art of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, together with the most important Italian Authorities, renewed its support to AMACI and to this event, promoting the Contemporary Day and its events. Terna is among the event’s promoters and has been a strong supporter of the AMACI initiatives, determined to creating a stronger, richer and more encouraging collaboration.

The Contemporary Day will not only be devoted to art, but also to social involvement and commitment. The fine line of experimenting and ongoing research links the AMACI world to the AIRC, the Italian Association for Cancer Research which since 1965 has been involved in the fight against tumors. AMACI and contemporary art are both actively involved in creating an awareness among the population with regard to the importance of the Italian contribution to medical research.
