Turning Macro into a great square of contemporary art. This is the new challenge of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome and its new director Luca Massimo Barbero. As of 15 July a new exhibition of the permanent collection will be on display in Via Reggio Emilia during the whole summer: it is a completely renewed journey in the figurative arts thanks to the artworks of the museum and some long-term loans. The newly arrived artworks which are going to enrich the museum’s holdings come from private collectors and important institutional partners. Massimo Bartolini, Stefano Arienti, Armin Linke, Adrian Paci, Nicola Pellegrini, Sergio Pucci and Giuseppe Capogrossi are some of the artists whose art is going to be on display in addition to other artists who have left their creative imprint at the Terna Prize 01: Luigi Ontani and Giovanni Albanese, respectively the winners in the Terawatt and Megawatt Categories. The important operations which Barbero was able to carry out with great intelligence and swiftness have placed Macro among the most effective Italian exhibition circuits. “We plan to open the new Macro in 2010, a place which, I’m sure, neighbourhood residents will greatly appreciate – explained the director. I expect that our terrace will be visited by citizens as a new square from where one can enjoy a breathtaking view and where one can eat at the new restaurant. Furthermore, we are going to open some guest quarters on the same floor for the artists and curators who will be working at Macro”. The program also calls for the involvement of the citizens. “We can already announce the so-called Room mates project, “Coinquilini”. Starting in the fall, two or three Roman curators will encourage artists to create a common project in the museum. It is an unusual way to start a dialogue which we hope will be enthralling and creative”. Barbero has also spoken about the initiatives of the Macro Future at Piazza Oreste Giustiniani. From 19 September through 1 November, under the spotlights “New York minute: 60 artists from the New York artist scene”, the first exhibit organized by the Depart Foundation that will feature the main New York art trends through three categories: Street Punk, Wild Figuration and New Abstraction.
