Paolo Curti - Curti/Gambuzzi & Co Gallery - “The poet, the merchant, the prince: three aces narrating art”

“A gallery involved in research is not limited to presenting exhibits by artists, but also to creating contacts with the art system that is often identified in the Renaissance concept of the poet, merchant and prince. The poet creates, the merchant promotes, the prince legitimizes”.

What is the difference between the activities of a “research” gallery and that of a commercial gallery?

Initially none, since the goal is to buy, promote and sell “objects” with an intrinsic value that is often very low to which a plus is added that enhances the form and the contents based on certain factors and, to a certain extent, also the price. Specifically, all this seems easy, however it becomes a much more complicated type of work and this is why a gallery that intends to be seriously placed on the market must also carry out extensive research activity that is not limited to organizing exhibits, but also to creating contacts with the art system. The system is often identified in the Renaissance concept of the poet, merchant and prince. The poet creates, the merchant promotes and the prince legitimizes. Then there are galleries that with less seriousness only buy and sell artworks with great superficiality, but that is another type of work.

How can a young artist build his career?

Great artists, whether young or old, are not interested in building a career, but in changing art, leaving an important mark in history with their work.

….in this sense, do you feel you can propose a mini decalogue?

A true artist does not know what a decalogue is, his only interest is in expressing the passion that burns within him.

Which are the things that you feel an artist should never do?

Be interested in the market, go to parties, read art magazines.

How much does it cost in terms of time and energy to plan and organize an exhibit?

A lot, just think that an exhibit is often planned even two years before, but until the opening, one never knows how it will go.

How is a program defined?

Thinking about something that unites artists with different styles, but having a common denominator.

Which is your exhibition line?

In our gallery we are mainly interested in painting, a technique that has presently been somewhat obscured by a dominant way of thinking to make room for other forms “that talk about something”, texts, explanations, videos, that “have a sense” leaving little space for material and physical forms, for color and strangeness. We believe that painting represents the avant-garde of our times.

Do you have relations with international galleries?

We have relations with many international galleries particularly in the western world, we like to go there.

…So how is a good network created?

One begins young, getting on a plane, knocking on the gallery doors and looking for those that one has a greater creative affinity with.

Galleria Paolo Curti /Annamaria Gambuzzi & Co

The Gallery was founded in November 1999, by Paolo Curti and Annamaria Gambuzzi. The trend was always that of promoting contemporary art through already affirmed artists of international fame such as Miquel Barcelò, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Ettore Sottsass, and Andy Warhol, as well as emerging artists such as Ryan McGinness, Carsten Nicolai, Greg Bogin, Jonathan Meese, Benénédicte Peyrat, Sheba Chhachhi.

The gallery’s minimalist architecture allows the artworks exhibited to be the sole protagonists of the space. Painting, sculpture, installation artworks, performances and digital art are alternated in the exhibition program and provide many visitors with a broad overview of the contemporary art trends.
