This sculpture exploring the funereal use of flowers as shorthand for grief and the temporal nature of life. Each wax flower and leaf is pulled, stretched and delicately molded by hand, resulting in thousands of my fingerprints impressed into the sculpture. Votive reads as something alive with animation yet frozen in time. The nature of the pale wax has a ghost-like presence, and the scale is intimate. The flowers and leaves are modeled on Camellia Susanqua, a popular Southern ornamental and a favorite of my recently deceased father. This work honors the past by uses elements of the natural world to embrace and face the future.
